Day 84: Gann Valley to Fort Thompson, SD

Well, we skipped dinner and breakfast, but it could have been a lot worse.

The water sources we were counting on had dried up. Perhaps we shouldn’t have walked past all those cattle tanks. That said, I’ve pulled water from cow troughs and muddy ponds before, and thought I’d spare you the experience. I still remember the green froth that bubbled up that time my travel companions and I tried to boil water from a cow pond …

Anyway, it worked out — thanks to carrying about ten pounds of water out of Wessington Springs, plus a little assist from Old Blue, who stood back and allowed the morning sky to fill up with clouds.

Sure did make the scenery pretty …

A friend raves about Fort Thompson, loves spending long periods of time there.
Good luck as you head west. Sure will be different landscape, eventually.

I didn’t see much there, except a casino. Also a nice lake, if you have a boat. But pedestrians have much more limited options in cases like this.
